Academic Work from 2008-2010

Collaboration Studio

Project: Galveston, TX Boutique Hotel • 2009 • AutoCAD, SketchUp + Podium

Collaboration Studio was a junior-level course designed to help interior design, architecture, and landscape architecture students learn to collaborate and work together on a project. The prompt for the assignment was to design a boutique hotel located on the coast in Galveston, TX, that included, among other spaces, a bar, coffee shop, lobby, reception area, restaurant, cigar bar, gift shop, and three guest room styles. We researched the location and created mood boards and concepts as a team. My responsibilities included programming the interior (bubble, traffic flow, and blocking diagrams), designing an interior floor plan for seven floors, selecting materials/furniture, and creating interior renderings for a few selected spaces. The work and images shown are solely reflective of my own work.

Project: Dr. Overly’s Office Renovation • 2008 • Hand Renderings, AutoCad + Material Board

The assignment prompt for this project was to present concepts for a renovation of our client, an interior design professor, based on a painting. Our task was to create designs for the client's waiting room, sunroom, outdoor patio, and office, split into three zones: a working space, a meeting space, and a kitchenette space. Upon interviewing the client, I learned he was interested in and appreciated Japanese culture. The piece of art I selected was of a stylized koi fish that had pops of blue and orange-red. Since the office space was small, I chose to add privacy to his meeting spaces by adding lightweight, semi-transparent soju screens that added a visual barrier without overpowering the space. I selected light, natural, and Japanese-inspired materials, including embroidered woven grasses and silky pillows. In keeping with modern Japanese furniture styles, I selected seating that was low to the ground with simplistic organic forms. My design was selected by the client as the best-executed renovation design.
